The 15th ranked Muskegon Community College wrestling team took the mat against the nation’s top teams and finished respectably in 7th place. In the opening round the Jayhawks lost a very close dual meet to the defending national champions Clackamas Community College 21-18. Clackamas is currently ranked 2nd in the country. “We came out to ready to wrestle against Clackamas and battled hard,” exclaimed Coach Mark Brunger. “I am impressed by the effort of all the kids.” The Jayhawks lost another tough dual meet to 11th ranked Harper College 25-13 before defeating the 20th ranked Rend Lake College 45-6. Top individual performances for the weekend came from 141 lb. Steven Ruppert who finished 2-1 including a 12-9 decision over the top ranked Cody Randall of Clackamus. 149lb. Sean Turner finished 2-1, 149lb Luke Faultersack finished 2-0, 157lb Eric Telford finished 1-0, 165lb Calib Rought finished 2-0 with wins over two ranked opponents, 174lb Trevor Curtice finished 1-0, 184lb Tom Bolday finished 2-1, 285lb Ryan Steverson finished 2-1.
MCC wrestling will next compete on Saturday, January 14th at the Lincoln Duals in Lincoln, IL.

The Jayhawks opened their season by picking up two dual meet wins on Friday night and rolled that momentum into Saturday when they placed 9 wrestlers in the top 4 of their respective weight classes and added 3 unattached teammates to the top 4 as well. Jayhawks winning championships were 157lb returning All-American Eric Telford of Durand, and fellow sophomore 174lb Jacob Brown of Coopersville. “The kids wrestled really well this weekend, we had a little bit of a slow start in our first dual but we just kept getting better as the weekend wore on. I’m looking forward to another great season,” said Coach Mark Brunger.
